As a black Zimbabwean girl who grew up in Australia and New Zealand, I always felt a lack of representation of black women in illustrated or painted works of art. I would visit art galleries and only see paintings of people who looked nothing like me, to the point where I would only draw people with fair skin as a child.
I paint women of colour because it is a part of who I am.
I believe it is so important to understand who you are in this diverse world and this is my way of being in touch with my heritage, my ancestry & my culture.
I paint black women not to neglect the other wonderful cultures and races of this world, but to further represent our existence into the world of art.
