Growing up in Australia and New Zealand often meant being the only black child in a whole school. Field trips meant seeing only paintings and sculptures of white people in museums and only being shown black art in the context of slavery or poverty in class.
So I started painting black women. With each other, with jewellery, crowns and no clothes on, celebrating their bodies unapologetically - because I needed to see us represented as beautiful, loving and joyful in art - as we as a people. I needed to see this representation before I could live it out myself.
As a grown black woman, as an artist & a future mother to my daughter - I have never felt more grounded in who I am and why I do what I do. I will never question myself and why I paint the women I paint. The representation we show and create today matters more than ever for all our futures & the future of our children.
